I keep my chickens primarily for egg production, but I also keep older hens around if they have something to teach the younger hens. I also like to raise chicks and sometimes I keep a rooster if they have the right personality. I always pay close attention to my flock’s temperament with a focus on secure housing, proper feed and keeping the birds safe and healthy. I have a mixed flock of birds on purpose sometimes useful birds matter more than unique-looking ones, although I also like a variety of eggshell colors in my basket.
I hope to help you with information that is practical. CoopSage is my attempt to make chicken keeping accessible to the average person without stressing everyone out about the right things or the wrong things to do. I will give my practical advice.

What I value in chicken husbandry
- Useful birds in the flock
- Taking care of your birds without wasting money.
- Free-ranging is great for you and your birds’ well-being.
- The coop and the feeding system need to still work when the weather turns ugly.
- Beginners have a lot to learn and that’s OK.
I hope that each page I write will be useful to at least one person.
